Keir Mather MP is set to play a key role in the UK Government’s transport and logistics agenda, with responsibility for maritime, aviation and freight policy at the Department for Transport (DfT).
He has been closely involved in the Government’s freight policy, including the development of a new Freight Plan. In June, he confirmed its publication had been delayed until the autumn to ensure it reflected emerging priorities including freight resilience, economic growth and decarbonisation.
He has also taken a prominent role in the Government’s programme to decarbonise road freight.
His expanded brief will put him at the centre of work on the future freight strategy, HGV decarbonisation and measures to improve the resilience and efficiency of the UK’s freight network.
Ben Fletcher, Logistics UK chief executive, said Mather had “always been a great champion of our industry’s work”.
He added: “The expansion of Mr Mather’s role now demonstrates the critical role that logistics can play in the rejuvenation of the UK’s economy and shows that the Government is listening to us.”
RHA managing director Richard Smith welcomed the appointment of a “dedicated minister for logistics”.
He said: “We also welcome the Minister’s comments recognising the contribution of the RHA, amongst others, in making the case for the creation of this role. That recognition matters, but more importantly it demonstrates the strength of a collective industry voice and what can be achieved through sustained, constructive engagement with government.”
