Operators should use their purchasing power to encourage maintenance providers to join the Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS).

That was the message from Senior Traffic Commissioner Kevin Rooney speaking at RTX 2026.

He said around 235 workshops are already accredited, with another 170 in the pipeline, but noted that there are around 12,000 maintenance providers listed on the Vehicle Operator Licensing database.

“We published the standard last April, and we’ve now got something like 235 workshops registered on the scheme, with about 170 in the pipeline,” he said.

STC Kevin Rooney also highlighted the growing importance of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), calling on operators to develop clear policies governing their use.

“My call to action for you as a business, if you’re an operator, is to develop a policy for ADAS,” he said. “Make sure drivers are trained and understand how these systems work – and how they don’t.”

He also urged fleets to ensure technicians understand the systems and the consequences of any damage or tampering.
