Motorway service area operator Moto is offering free truck parking to lorry drivers who book a room at any of its Travelodge sites where truck parking is available.
The offer follows a meeting between DriverWell founder Peter McKenna and Moto Hospitality trading director for retail and fuel Nikki Rogers.
“Hotel guests arriving by car get half-price parking, while HGV drivers pay full price to park the truck on top of the cost of their room,” he said.
While a room is around twice the price of truck parking, he acknowledged, it does provide privacy, a clean shower and a comfortable bed. “It will provide an alternative for a seasoned tramper who wants to take advantage of a room with clean facilities, as well as any day-or-night shift driver who’s run out of hours without any overnight bag,” he added.
There are 32 Moto Travelodge sites, most of which have truck parking.
“For the moment, this is the arrangement for the foreseeable future while Moto works on a longer-term solution,” he said.
“Proper sleep is not a luxury in this job. It is fatigue management, it is mental health, and it is road safety for everyone sharing the road with you.”
