Looking Back: Norfrost

Despite its base in Castletown on the far north coast of Scotland Norfrost became a major producer of chest freezers in the 1970s exporting their products all over the world, writes Ian Lawson.

Running a sizeable fleet of Scania trucks, some were triple shifted on trunk work, and over time it also took on some general haulage work.

Due to changes in product design, cheaper overseas competitors, consumer demand and global markets, Norfrost ceased trading in 2004.

In 2005 John G Russell acquired Norfrost, who had cited long-term losses incurred by its own transport division and its remote location.

Administrators from KPMG Corporate Recovery approached John G Russell, suggesting the efficiency of the groups transport and distribution network could be the way to return Norfrost to profitability.

John G Russell confirmed that manufacturing would be maintained in Caithness and that it would trunk fridges down to its warehouse and distribution complex in Hillingdon.

The new company traded as Icetech Freezers, and it was dissolved in 2016.
