Met Office: ‘The First Taste of Winter’

Lorry drivers making their way across Scotland have been warned that they must ‘drive to the conditions’ as Met Office forecast ice and snow across the country, writes Peter Brown.

Retired transport consultant and regular contributor to Transport News, John Robertson said lorry drivers tend to cope well when faced with adverse weather conditions. “So far we haven’t had anything resembling winter but as temperatures begin to fall below zero this week the conditions will change,” he acknowledged.

“As such, the Met Office’s declaration that the ‘first taste of winter’ will arrive, means surface conditions will change. Slow down, especially for the bends and take care when braking.

“Always keep your distance and look well ahead. Using a lower gear with secondary braking systems helps reduce your speed without using the footbrake.”

The Met Office issued yellow warnings for snow and ice across northern Scotland, as well as for hauliers heading across the border to northern England.

Temperatures are predicted to drop to -7C.

“It is going to be quite a widely cold week,” Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey said. “A few degrees below average both day and night for most of the country.”
