TARGETED action by Police Scotland on the A9 between Stirling and Inverness using average speed cameras has seen ‘notice of intended prosecution’ (NIP) letters issued for ‘speeding’ dramatically increase by 11,000%, from one NIP being sent every 28 hours, to 110 per day.
A response to a Freedom of Information request to Police Scotland, triggered by several couriers and hauliers contacting Transport News, revealed that from 17 July 2023 to 14 August, Police Scotland sent 3,198 NIPs to owners of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and four to those owning HGVs in just 29 days for drivers caught exceeding the national speed limit via average speed cameras.
Previously, from 1 January 2020 up to and including the 16 July 2023, just 1,116 had been sent, all to LCV owners, across 42 months.
