Moving from diesel to electric-powered road going vehicles isn’t straightforward, but you might start that transition from the yard. Gordon Roberts speaks with Alisdair Couper about Terberg’s zero-tailpipe emission shunter.
WHILE pressure mounts to switch the truck fleet to alternative fuels and power supply, there is some lower hanging fruit that a haulier might pick off first. For example, the shunter. And in this case, the Terberg YT203EV yard shunter.
Originally launched in 2019, the YT203EV is based on Terberg’s the YT193/YT223 yard shunter. Replacing the Cummins diesel engine and Allison gearbox are lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of up to 222kWh, which power a ZF CeTrax electric central drivetrain.
It includes a battery Thermal Management System that allows it to be used in ambient temperatures from -30C to +50C. “The previous version didn’t have that, but it’s vital, even in the UK,” explained Terberg DTS UK MD Alisdair Couper, “and ignoring it would be negligent.”
