Hauliers can now receive discounts of up to £120,000 on new electric trucks after the government announced an extra £18 million to extend the Plug-in Truck Grant to March 2026, writes Peter Brown.
Government is also set to launch a consultation on plans to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040, seeking industry feedback on how it should be conducted.
The DfT said even though ‘day-to-day running costs can be lower for electric trucks compared to their diesel counterparts, upfront vehicle costs are typically higher’ and that the Plug-in Truck Grant ‘will help businesses access those daily savings, cutting costs for business as well as emissions’.
New grant levels mean:
- Smaller trucks from 4.25 to 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight could save up to £20,000
- Mid-sized trucks from 12 to 18 tonnes GVW could save up to £60,000
- Trucks from 18 to 26 tonnes could save up to £80,000
- And the largest lorries above 26 tonnes could save up to £120,000
Minister for aviation, maritime and decarbonisation Keir Mather said: “Our proposals will provide the certainty the industry has been calling for so that Britain becomes the best place for green investment.”
