New 20mph Speed Limits To Be Introduced Across Argyll and Bute

by | Nov 6, 2025 | Hot News

Transport Scotland has announced a series of 20mph speed limits on major truck roads across Argyll and Bute, reports Peter Brown.

Each 20mph speed limit is implemented via an 18-month long Temporary Traffic Regulation Order to allow for monitoring and evaluation to be carried out prior to a decision being made on whether they should become permanent.

The signs will start to be uncovered from 7 November 2025, at which point the new speed limits will become active.

These include:

  • sections of the A83 at Ardrishaig, Inveraray, and Tarbert,
  • sections of the A82 and A83 at Tarbet,
  • and parts of the A85 at Connel.

Cabinet secretary for transport Fiona Hyslop said: “Road safety remains an absolute priority for the Scottish Government, and that is why we are investing a record £48 million this financial year into roads safety activity and programmes.

“One death is one too many and I am focused on making our roads safer through Scotland’s Road Safety Framework to 2030.

“Reducing excessive speed is a key focus of that work. Research shows that if someone is hit by a car at 20mph, they are seven times more likely to survive than if they were hit at 30mph.

“The implementation of more 20mph speed limits will improve road safety – keeping people safe and making it easier for people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.”

Previously road haulage companies had voiced their concern that 20mph speed limits were being quickly introduced, while a decision on moving to 50mph on single carriageway roads for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes had been unnecessarily delayed.

Transport News understands that a decision on the 50mph issue will be made before the year is out.
