New Iveco CNG Wagons Cut Emissions For Keenan Recycling

Food waste collector Keenan Recycling has reduced emissions with 10 new Iveco Eurocargo trucks powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), reports Peter Brown.

Operating out of Aberdeen, the CNG trucks are fitted with the 6.7 litre Tector 7 engine, which can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95% when using biomethane. Each Eurocargo has six standard 115 litre tanks and three additional 140 litre tanks and will cover around 25,000 miles per year.

Keenan Recycling produce their own fuel through anaerobically digested food waste, which creates biomethane and biofertilizer.

It is also the first Iveco trucks on the fleet, which were supplied by dealer AM Phillip, and they are fitted with a Macpac 110 refuse body capable of holding up to 11m³ of waste, equating to eight tonnes of weight.

Grant Keenan is the managing director at Keenan Recycling. “Our day-to-day operation demands a lot of our vehicles, which is why we needed something that could keep up with those requirements,” he said.

“Running these vehicles on CNG allows us to operate a circular economy – making use of what would otherwise be a waste product – whilst delivering a spectacular reduction in emissions.”

Keenan Recycling diverted more than 50,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill in 2024.

Founded in 2001, Keenan Recycling has grown into one of the UK’s leading food waste collection and recycling providers, operating from 27 depots across England, Wales, and Scotland.

Last year, Keenan Recycling was acquired by waste management company Biffa.
