The director of a Scottish road haulage company was jailed alongside his accomplice for attempting to bring £1.5 million worth of drugs hidden in watermelons into Scotland, reports Peter Brown.

Steven Lawson, a director of Bellshill-based MCL Transport (Scotland) Limited, and Scott McSeveney planned to smuggle cannabis hidden in boxes of watermelons from Spain.

Scott McSeveney had recruited Steven Lawson to transport 159 packages of cannabis labelled as watermelons. Steven Lawson was stopped by Border Force officers on his way back to Scotland at the Eurotunnel port in Coquelles, France in July 2020, when the discovery was made.

The pair were sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

Scott McSeveney pled guilty in March 2025 to being concerned in the supply of cannabis and was sentenced to eight years and two months.

Steven Lawson maintained his innocence but was convicted after a trial of being involved in serious organised crime and was jailed for five years by Lord Colbeck.
