In just three years, the NWH Group has made significant strides in narrowing its mean gender pay gap, compared to the UK-wide national average.

The Edinburgh-based waste management and haulage company reduced its mean* gender pay gap (the difference between the average hourly earnings of men and women) at 0.78% for 2024.

This represents a significant improvement from 3.45% in 2023 and 6.23% in 2022, explained finance director Nairn Black.

The UK-wide mean gender pay gap for all employees, as reported by the Office for National Statistics, stood at 7.0% in 2024, a slight decrease from 7.5% in 2023 and 8.3% in 2022.

Successful recruitment has been an important tool to help close the gap, he said, and added: “We’re already focussed on recruitment strategies that prioritise merit and potential, ensuring that opportunities are open to a diverse pool of candidates, and our training and development programs support the professional growth of all employees, helping them excel in their roles and advance within the company.”

He said that ‘there is more to be done’, and added: “Waste management and haulage have historically been male dominated, but as an industry, tackling the challenges is vital and we must be committed to breaking down barriers by promoting inclusive recruitment, supporting career development for women, and fostering a workplace culture where talent is recognised and rewarded fairly.”

The NWH Group’s male workforce is at 83.6%, down slightly from 83.9% three years ago.
