The latest guidance on load retention from DfT and HSE has been published, and it features in the current issue of Transport News thanks to freelancer Richard Simpson.
Top of the list is workplace safety, with the HSE highlighting the potential risk of unloading when an item has shifted in transport.
There are also a few grey areas; for example, the DfT says drivers must be given a safe place from which they can watch their vehicle being loaded but says little about how they can actually control the process. This is in direct contrast to the situation in Germany where safe loading practices and a guide to safe unloading, are the responsibilities of the good’s consignor.
And there is a new section on cranes and similar equipment, which emphasises that they cannot be used to retain cargo and must be restrained so they cannot move during transport.
