In the current issue of Transport News, Steve Banner looks at the safety rating scheme for heavy commercial vehicles.
A part of Euro NCAP’s mission is to achieve what it calls ‘Vision Zero’. This means eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
Born from the car sector, it has developed a five-star safety rating system to help consumers, their families and businesses compare vehicles more easily and to help them identify the safest choice for their needs.
Now it has turned its attention to heavy commercial vehicles. The safety rating is determined from a series of vehicle tests, which have been designed by and carried out by Euro NCAP.
These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real-life scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
In short, its motto is ‘the more stars the better’.
