A haulage company has been fined for a series of failures that led to the death of a motorist, writes Peter Brown.

George Moran was travelling on the A92 when a mooring buoy being transported by Colin Lawson Transport Limited became loose and struck the car.

Despite swerving to avoid a collision, the impact killed George Moran and severely injured his wife Pamela. The incident took place on 22 August 2020.

The firm admitted failing to ensure that the loads were properly secured and did not pose a risk to the public and was fined £225,000 with a victim surcharge of £16,875 at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

The court was told that in a separate incident four months later, an poorly secured load shifted when the lorry transporting it clipped a kerb causing the vehicle to become unstable and turn onto its nearside, causing damage to a wall.
