Heidi Alexander.

Heidi Alexander has been named as the new transport secretary after Louise Haigh’s resignation, writes Peter Brown.

Louise Haigh resigned after a spent criminal offence issued by police before she became an MP resurfaced.

It was reported by various news channels that she has admitted a decade ago she told police she had lost her work mobile phone in a mugging, but later found it had not been taken.

She was given a conditional discharge by magistrates.

Louise Haigh is the first resignation from the new Labour administration.

She has been the MP for Sheffield Heeley since 2015.

Heidi Alexander had previously served as Deputy Mayor of London for Transport.
