Joe Morrison had already run a successful business before setting up the eponymously named haulage company that operates out of Strathaven. He talks to Kevin Swallow about commercial vehicle specifications and adopting early technology, as the firm celebrates its 45th anniversary.
AT 65, JOE contemplated retirement. Having worked seven days a week, for as long as he could remember, and with many of his friends already retired, it was tempting.
“I played golf,” he recalled, “and I joined the Strathaven Golf Club. They introduced me to the ‘early morning club’, which met at about 11am. They were each sat with a half pint and the Scotsman newspaper. I was used to starting at five in the morning getting ready to work… I thought no, I’m not quite ready to retire yet.”
That was 11 years ago. Today, Joe is still working a five-and-a-half-day week at the Strathaven business that bears his name, JW Morrison Haulage Contractor.
