DEMAND for next day delivery in the UK is on the rise resulting in more freight drivers having to navigate busy cities, which is substantially different to open motorway driving, so should commercial drivers be trained for city driving? asks Richard Owen Hughes, marketing director at Driver Hire.
“Urban area driving has its own unique challenges and this is not something which is covered in standard HGV training, and especially when you are in a large vehicle.
“Training can help the challenges of congested cities with confidence and here are a few tips,” he suggested.
• Research the route before you travel. • Research Events in the Area. • Update maps data on navigational devices. • Look after yourself, by staying hydrated, sleeping well and eating nutritious food that will help you stay alert. • Attend a safe urban driving course that will encompass additional skills with both theory and practical situations.
