A new tool in the DVSA’s utility belt of enforcement weapons can ‘pull’ data from an HGV’s tachograph, without even stopping the vehicle. Chris Tindall investigates.THE DRIVER and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) refers to it as ‘game changing’. Without even having to flag down a truck at the roadside, officers can now identify tachograph violations and which drivers are potentially dangerously tired.
The technology is dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and it promises to revolutionise HGV traffic enforcement.
Remote tachograph sensing equipment, otherwise known as DSRC, receives data transmitted from the antennae on smart tachos. DVSA traffic examiners are then able to read, interrogate and act on the data DSRC feeds to their IT systems.
