ONE IN 10 vehicles were found to have dangerous mechanical issues during a day of co-ordinated action by Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), National Highways and police forces on Britain’s roads.
These included problems with steering, suspension, wheels, tyres, and brakes. The vehicles were immediately removed from the road by agency teams.
The Day of Action on 29 September saw agencies targeting high risk vehicles from Edinburgh to Dover and Glasgow to Plymouth. There were 83 deliberate or negligent traffic offences recorded. In total, 150 prohibitions were handed out that saw 410 HGVs and 108 vans and light goods vehicles checked across the country.
While this action day shows that the majority of the commercial vehicle industry are safe and operating legally, it also highlighted a concerning number of operators posing a serious risk to road users every day.
Dangerous HGVs and drivers not only cause a severe risk to road users, but also by cutting corners on safety try to seek a commercial advantage over properly run operators, stressed DVSA.
