The Girl Torque team were united by their profession as lorry drivers. Karen Sutherland talks to David Craik about how it has changed their lives and how it has started to influence a new generation.
AT TRUCKFEST Scotland held at Ingliston in August, Aberdeenshire lorry driver Karen Sutherland was approached by the parents of two excited young girls.
“They told me that the girls wanted to become lorry drivers when they grew up,” recalls Karen, who drives for Keith based livestock and general haulier Ian S Roger. “I was welling up because I thought that our work was starting to make a difference.”
Karen is referring to a moment 12 months earlier when she and around 25 female friends, all working in the industry, literally had a vision of how to improve the image of women in haulage and attract more into the job.
