New traffic commissioners (TCs) should have some transport industry experience, according to James Firth, head of road freight regulation at Logistics UK.
“They need to have been named on an O-licence at some point,” he suggested.
This would give them a better understanding of the day-to-day pressures’ operators face, he said.
“They’ll know what it’s like for a transport manager to have the company’s sales director shouting at him because he has refused to allow a truck laden with goods to leave the yard because it’s not roadworthy,” he explained.
