NEW COLLEGE Lanarkshire’s Motherwell Campus has the largest automotive teaching facility in Scotland, delivering training to over 500 students per year. This includes a mix of full-time programmes, apprenticeship training, and upskilling courses for technicians looking to gain irtec and IMI accreditations. There is also an automotive facility at its Cumbernauld Campus in the heart of the town centre.
With over 20 qualified teaching staff, more than 70 training vehicles, state-of-the-art training equipment, access to online training material and automotive library resources, New College delivers excellence in automotive education, ensuring it meets all training needs.
The HGV training centre, which houses a 483sq.m workshop area and two dedicated classrooms, opened in 2014 and it has been delivering modern apprenticeship training for HGV technicians since. To complement this, New College is also offering a Specialist Tyre Fitting Modern Apprenticeship to help support the industry.
A Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Modern Apprenticeship course combines ‘off the job’ and ‘on the job’ training, to produce technically competent automotive professionals. The course runs for 3.5 years, with candidates learning a range of skills including:
• workplace safety
• engineering skills (leading on to vehicle inspection and servicing)
• maintenance, repair and diagnosing faults around the engine, chassis and electrical systems.
New College also offers training and apprenticeship programmes for light vehicles, motorcycle, body repair and refinishing, as well as upskilling courses for EV/Hybrid L1-3, MOT managers, MOT class 4-7 and MOT class 1-2.
Alongside the delivery at college, assessors also visit companies to observe the practical skills of apprentices in the workplace and work closely with them towards gaining an SVQ work related qualification.
Working with Skills Development Scotland, New College are able to access funding to help cover the course fees for all apprentices.
