TRANSPORT Scotland (TS) has confirmed the Scottish government’s intention to create Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in four cities between February and May 2022.
The air quality improvement initiative will be enforced in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
Plans to implement the LEZs were paused due to Covid restrictions but legislative work has now restarted with the aim to work as quickly as possible to introduce the LEZs at the earliest juncture with the first half of 2022 being the most realistic period, said a TS spokesman, who also suggested that ‘examination processes’ could also have an impact on the final timeframes for introduction.
Also, LEZ enforcement across various vehicle types may be subject to ‘adjustment’ decided by respective local authorities.
However Transport Scotland has released the current minimum emission standards for vehicles entering an LEZ:
Euro 4 engines for petrol cars and vans
Euro 6 engines for diesel cars and vans
Euro 6 engines for HGVs
Low Emission Zones Scotland has prepared a basic 4-step online Vehicle Checker to help ensure vehicle compliance.
