UNTIL recently, few people had heard of ‘furlough’, yet the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on business, the economy and road haulage means that in the coming months many workers will be relying on it to be paid.
In short, furlough means ‘grant leave of absence’. You remain employed, and on the payroll, but you aren’t allowed to work for your employer. Once enacted by your employer you will be on it for a minimum of three weeks.
Companies can claim 80% of their employees’ wages from the government, up to a maximum of £2,500 per person each month before tax.
