Central government has been accused of ‘passing the buck’ over clean air policies and ignoring practical solutions to reduce emissions, reports Kevin Swallow. Armed with new powers to set up low emission zones and charge accordingly, local authorities have been quick to propose the severest emission regulations available.
HOWARD Cox, the founder of FairFuelUK, says government’s refusal to own and lead on ‘poor air quality’ will result in hauliers paying the price for draconian Clean Air Zones (CAZs) and Low Emissions Zones (LEZs) set up ad hoc by local authorities.
He blasted Chris Grayling at the Department for Transport (DfT) and Michael Gove at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for passing all decision making to the regions.
